One of the most common criminal complaints people are accused of in Municipal Court is shoplifting. It is a common crime. However, as minor and routine as it sounds the complaint often is a mistake and made by an overzealous store security guard who does not have sufficient evidence to actually convict the person. Some people take the position that shoplifting is a minor offense and the charge has no real consequences.
This cavalier attitude is a mistake for people who are concerned about their record. Criminal background checks are now routine for prospective employers and a shoplifting conviction concerns honesty and can be a red flag preventing an employment offer.
