““I hired Mr. Tom Chaves to represent my interests in a multiple automobile accident dispute. He is personable, professional and passionate about his cases. I was astonished more by his strategic questioning; he is articulate, direct and concise, while offering advice….” – Tiffany N.
“Tom, I want to thank you for your role in representing my client Ira S. He is a long term friend and client and your ability to argue a case has prompted a congratulatory phone call from Ira to myself for directing him to the firm. He stated, “The comfort level….” – Regards, John A.
Legal Expertise with You in Mind
25 + Years Of Experience
Dedicated To Protecting Your Interests
Defending People Accused Of Every Type Of Crime
You need someone who is experienced and dedicated to protecting your interests. Its important that you ask the right questions in deciding which lawyer or law firm to retain. You should ask what experience and results any potential lawyer has for your specific legal problem. You do not need a “jack of all trades,” someone who makes promises to get you to retain them they know they can’t keep or a lawyer who will immediately pass your case to a less experienced lawyer in their firm.
In criminal cases your liberty and future career are at stake. Criminal background checks are now routinely performed by employers and a conviction can disqualify you from being hired even if it is a relatively minor offense. In order to get the best result you need a lawyer who is compassionate and has defended and tried similar cases. Equally important is to hire a lawyer who knows the Judge assigned your case and the Prosecutor’s Office involved with the case. Knowledge of how Judges and a particular Prosecutor’s Office will deal with your case is critical. Some Prosecutor’s Offices, for example, will usually reject most applicants from the pre-trial intervention program. Other Offices do not want to try cases and will routinely lower the plea offer as the case progresses. I have represented clients in criminal cases in Essex, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset, and Union counties. I know many of the Prosecutors and Judges and how to navigate the system.
New Jersey has among the toughest DWI/DUI laws in the country. If you are found guilty, at a minimum you will lose your license for 3 months, have to pay fines and court costs of $400 and have to pay expensive insurance surcharges for years. You may also have to have an interlock device installed in your car which requires you to blow into it in order to start the car’s engine. You should ask the lawyer how many DWI cases he has handled, if he or she has appeared in that Court and how he or she will defend the case. DWI cases involve not only knowledge of the law but a feel for what chances a particular defense may have.
In personal injury cases, make sure that the lawyer understands how the accident has affected your life and what steps are needed to ensure the maximum recovery. Make sure that the lawyer knows good experts in order to prove either liability or the seriousness of your injuries. I have successfully represented people in personal injury and civil rights cases for over 25 years.
